Kaija NY

It was fortuitous timing in 2006 during a visit to her home country in the Philippines that, Khrisna Justo, then a New York based general manager for a prestigious health club, had what now seems a providential encounter with an artisan woman weaving fibers by the beach front in Boracay, a popular tourist destination in the country.
Amazed by the woman’s hand-weaving dexterity and fascinated by the vibrant colors of the fibers, Khrisna engaged in a dialogue with her, discovering that weaving was a major source of income for many women in that town.
With her sense of New York style, a head for business and a heart for empowering women and reaching out to communities, Khrisna took it upon herself to translate the natural, indigenous fiber called buntal into bag designs with a cosmopolitan flair. From there, Khrisna ventured into bag designs that “let nature take its course” both literally and figuratively. The inspiration of an elegant merger of the organic and city lifestyles marked the starting point of Kaija New York.
